    Hi all —

I’ve been working my way into die-marriage collecting for Liberty Seated halves and I’m grateful for the excellent foundational work Bill Bugert and Randy Wiley have done. Their registers are incredibly helpful, and I know Bill has been issuing addenda sheets as new die marriages are discovered.

That said, both Bugert and Wiley note that there are likely more die marriages yet to be documented. I’m particularly curious whether anyone has done any follow-up work (papers, forum postings, addenda, or unpublished notes) specifically on the Philadelphia issues for these years:

    • 1853 (P)

    • 1854 (P)

    • 1874 (P) through 1878 (P)

If you’ve seen anything new for those dates — new WB numbers, diagnostic die markers, high-res photos, or addenda sheets — I’d really appreciate pointers. I’m especially interested in:

    • Any WB (Bugert/Wiley) numbers or proposed attributions that post-date the registers.

    • High-resolution photos showing diagnostic marks (obverse/reverse) for comparison.

    • Notes about rarity or typical die states for Philadelphia dies in those years.

    • Links to E-Gobrecht articles, LSCC posts, or auction writeups that discuss previously unlisted marriages.

For reference, the examples I currently have are in lower circulated grades — 1853 VF20, 1854 VG10, 1874 VG8, 1875 VF20, 1876 G4, 1877 G4, and 1878 VG10 — all raw. Given their wear, I’m not sure how much die-marker detail can still be gleaned from them, but I’d be happy to post close-ups if they might still be of some use or comparison value.

Thanks in advance for any insights or references — and for all the excellent work this community continues to do in expanding on Bugert and Wiley’s foundation.

    Respectfully,

    Kevin Strattan LSCC #: 3051
