GAMC Poll: Term Limits and Public Service

Term limits are often discussed as a way to encourage new leadership, reduce long-term political entrenchment, and restore public trust in government.

There should absolutely be term limits for members of congress.  People tend not to change with the times.  The world is always changing, the needs of the American people are always changing.  It's as simple as this:  Old people have old ideas, new people have new ideas.

Term limits legislation may not be a hot issue for the midterm elections in 2026, So, when do we do it? never?  If you ask any federal or state legislators they mostly want term limits but nobody is willing to bell the cat. My own view is a term limits legislation suddenly puts an end to the plans of legislators for the next few years of their lives. However, if we legislate term limits prospectively, which means counting the term limit from the day the legislation passes, disregarding however long the official has already served, there will be a lot more votes in favor and also the public doesn't want to micromanage term limits. It is essential that the states and the federal legislatures get started with term limits as soon as possible and I see a greater chance for a prospective term limits legislation to become a reality.  Lack of term limits is creating 'politics is a career' mentality. We the people elect officials to run the government for a specific period of time and depart.  That will put an end to all the 'cabals' put togethere by incumbents to keep getting reelected indefinitely until old age intervenes.
